The H. Dickson Hats Caps & Furs No. 60 State Street Albany appears on the front of stoneware jug. This type of crock is often referred to as a merchant crock, was used historically for advertising purposes and to promote products.
There is an original handle and the screw on lid with a rubber seal. This may have been used as a water jug. The original cork is still present in the tap opening at the bottom, but the tap is missing
Dimensions: Stands approximately 17 inches high and 9 inches wide
I estimate this is a 2 gallon size
Condition: “the original handle has surface rust and patina; the screw on lid has some chipping in the threads but will still turn into the opening, there is no tap, I don't see and major chips or cracks on the outside surface”
The label transfer technique involves applying a printed design onto the pottery surface, which was a common practice in the 19th and early 20th centuries. I don't know the specific date that this jug was manufactured but I would estimate that it is before 1930.
- The merchant: H. Dickson was a hatter and furrier based in Albany, New York, who commissioned Moira Pottery to create these promotional crocks.
- Purpose: The crocks served as free merchant giveaways or store containers. They were a common form of advertising during the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
- Timeframe: While Moira Pottery was founded in 1922, the style of the advertising and the history of such merchant crocks suggest this specific item likely dates to the early 20th century.
