Rare Stoneware Jug originally from
H. Dickson Hatter Albany, New York
The H. Dickson Hats Caps & Furs No. 60 State Street Albany appears on the front of stoneware jug. This type of crock is often referred to as a merchant crock, was used historically for advertising purposes and to promote products.

There is an original handle and the screw on lid with a rubber seal. This may have been used as a water jug. The original cork is still present in the tap opening at the bottom, but the tap is missing

Dimensions: Stands approximately 17 inches high and 9 inches wide

I estimate this is a 2 gallon size

Condition: “the original handle has surface rust and patina; the screw on lid has some chipping in the threads but will still turn into the opening, there is no tap, I don't see and major chips or cracks on the outside surface”

According to information found online these pieces were commissioned to Moira Pottery in England during the 20th Century.

I believe this is jug was made by Moira Pottery although the stamp on the bottom is worn or possibly rubbed out at time of manufacture. It is stamped made in England which appears at the back of vessel close to the base (see pic for close up)

The label transfer technique involves applying a printed design onto the pottery surface, which was a common practice in the 19th and early 20th centuries. I don't know the specific date that this jug was manufactured but I would estimate that it is before 1930.

H. Dickson Hatter of Albany
  • The merchant: H. Dickson was a hatter and furrier based in Albany, New York, who commissioned Moira Pottery to create these promotional crocks.
  • Purpose: The crocks served as free merchant giveaways or store containers. They were a common form of advertising during the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
  • Timeframe: While Moira Pottery was founded in 1922, the style of the advertising and the history of such merchant crocks suggest this specific item likely dates to the early 20th century.
